Julienne Lusenge
Congolese Human Rights Activist; Co-Founder & President of Female Solidarity for Integrated Peace and Development; Director of the Congolese Women's Fund
Julienne Lusenge, a Congolese human rights activist, has dedicated her life to advocating for women's rights and peace in her community. As the co-founder and President of Female Solidarity for Integrated Peace and Development (SOFEPADI), she has been instrumental in fostering a sense of unity and progress. She also serves as the director of the Congolese Women's Fund (FFC), furthering her commitment to the cause. In addition, Lusenge's influence extends beyond her immediate surroundings, serving on the advisory committee of the International Campaign to Stop Rape and Gender Violence in Conflict Zones and as the Vice President of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF).
Lusenge's work has not gone unnoticed, as she has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards. She was honored with the 2018 Women's International Rights Award from the Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy and the 2016 Ginetta Sagan Award from Amnesty International. The French Government recognized her contributions to human rights, awarding her the Human Rights Award from the Embassy of France and naming her a Knight of the Legion of Honour. In 2021, she received an International Women of Courage Award and the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity.
Her influence and leadership were further recognized when she was appointed as co-chair of a seven-person independent commission by the World Health Organization (WHO) to investigate claims of sexual exploitation and abuse during the 2018 Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Lusenge's commitment to human rights and justice earned her the 2023 United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights. Lusenge was additionally included on Time's 100 Most Influential People of 2024 list. Her tireless efforts and dedication to her cause make her a figure of influence and inspiration in the field of human rights.
