Jun Wang

Founder & CEO of iCarbonX; Former CEO of the Beijing Genomics Institute

Dr. Jun Wang is the Founder and CEO of iCarbonX. Wang combined the sharp intuition of a businessman and the intellectual curiosity of a scientist to found one of the most groundbreaking AI research facilities of the past decade valued at over 1 billion upon its launch. In late 2015, Wang founded iCarbonX with the aim to develop an artificial intelligence engine to interpret and mine multiple health-related data and help people better manage their health and defeat disease. Wang used his technology to create his own digital DNA, a digital representation of his genetic makeup, which allowed him to discover that he had a genetic risk of gout and then took steps to reduce that risk.

In 1999, Wang co-founded the Bioinformatics Department of Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI, now known as BGI Shenzhen), one of China’s premier research facilities. BGI is now widely recognized as one of world’s premier research facilities committed to excellence in genome sciences. Until July 2015, Wang led the institution of 5,000+ people engaged in studies of genomics and its informatics. During this time, Dr. Wang managed three rounds of fundraising (about 1B$ in total), and acquired a U.S. public company, Complete Genomics. He was recognized with numerous awards and nominations, such as His Royal Highness Prince Foundation, and “Fortune’s 40 under 40” by Fortune Magazine (2013) and Highly Cited Researchers 2018” by Clarivate Analytics for the fifth consecutive year. Wang earned a bachelor’s degree in artificial intelligence and a Ph.D. in bioinformatics from Peking University.
