Justin Trudeau

Canadian Politician & Former Prime Minister of Canada

Justin Trudeau, the 23rd Prime Minister of Canada, held the position from November 4, 2015, to March 9, 2025. During his tenure, he introduced major government initiatives, such as the Canada Child Benefit and the legalization of recreational marijuana through the Cannabis Act. Trudeau also negotiated important trade deals, including the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), and made significant commitments to combat climate change by signing the Paris Agreement. His government launched a national $10-a-day childcare program and the Canadian Dental Care Plan. In response to the Freedom Convoy protests, he invoked the Emergencies Act, a first since its enactment in 1988.

Before his political career, Trudeau demonstrated an aptitude for public speaking. His eulogy at his father Pierre Trudeau's state funeral was broadcast by CBC and received significant public and political acclaim. This event marked his emergence as a prominent public figure in Canada, leading to increased media attention and his subsequent political career. He also starred in the two-part CBC Television miniseries "The Great War". Furthermore, Trudeau chaired the Katimavik youth program from 2002 to 2006 and was a panelist on CBC Radio's Canada Reads in 2002-03. He served as the Liberal Party's critic for multiculturalism and youth in 2009 and later for youth, citizenship, and immigration.

Trudeau holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in literature from McGill University and a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of British Columbia. He was elected as a Member of Parliament for Papineau in 2008 and re-elected in the 2011 federal election. He was appointed as the Liberal Party's critic for post-secondary education, youth, and amateur sport after the 2011 election. Trudeau won the Liberal Party of Canada leadership election on April 14, 2013, with 80.1% of the votes. He participated in public events such as the Vancouver Pride Festival and a demonstration in Ottawa against tuition fees.
