When Jennifer McCrea and Jeff Walker approached me about helping them craft the manuscript for their book The Generosity Network, I was delighted. Not just because they’re two of the most interesting, creative, and thoughtful people I’ve ever met (although they are). But because their work is such a natural companion to some of the other projects I’ve been lucky enough to work on as a book writer and editor.

We live in a world where big problems are crying out for solutions—problems ranging from endemic poverty and lack of access to health care and education to global climate change and persistent racial, ethnic, and sexual oppression. Governments have a huge role to play in tackling these challenges, but so do individuals from every walk of life. Some of the most inspiring and exciting book projects I’ve been associated with have specifically focused on the power of individuals, working collaboratively, to transform the world.

I’m thinking of books like Citizen You, in which hotelier and philanthropist Jonathan Tisch tells the story of some of today’s most effective social entrepreneurs and others who are making a real difference in our communities and around the world; The Triple Bottom Line, which I cowrote with Andy Savitz, a leading consultant and an expert on how businesses are redefining themselves around the concepts of environmental, social, and economic sustainability; Food Inc. and Waiting for “Superman,” two movie tie-in books I edited that explore major social challenges our nation is currently grappling with; and Creating a World Without Poverty and Building Social Business, the two books I’ve collaborated on with Professor Muhammad Yunus, the Nobel Prize-winning inventor of microcredit and founder of Grameen Bank.

I often tell people that I have the best job in the world, because I get to spend my time working with and learning from some of today’s most brilliant thinkers and helping them share their wisdom and stories with readers everywhere. The Generosity Network is one of the books I’m most proud to be associated with. I suspect that many thousands of readers will enjoy learning from Jennifer and Jeff just as much as I have—and that countless world-changing causes that deserve our support will benefit hugely as a result.
