Katie Witkiewitz        

Director, Center on Alcohol, Substance Use, & Addictions at the University of New Mexico

Katie Witkiewitz is Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Director of the Center on Alcohol, Substance Use, and Addictions at the University of New Mexico. She is a leading researcher and clinical psychologist treating individuals with substance use and mental health disorders, developing and evaluating new harm reduction and mindfulness-based treatments, and creating programs to promote wellbeing and recovery.

Dr. Witkiewitz' research topics include prevention of young adult substance use; development of behavioral treatments for addiction and comorbid mental health and physical health conditions; mechanisms of successful treatment outcomes; precision medicine approaches to addiction; and prediction of substance use following treatment for alcohol and drug use disorders. She is interested in public health approaches to reducing harms related to alcohol and other substance use, and policy related to alcohol and other substance use disorder.

Dr. Witkiewitz has received several notable awards for her research contributions and leadership, such as the Outstanding Leadership in Addiction Psychology from the Society of Addiction Psychology and the Early Career Achievement Award from the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from SUNY Potsdam, her Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology from the University of Montana, and her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Washington.
