Katrina Shealy

Senator, SC State Senate

Katrina Shealy is a Republican member of the South Carolina State Senate representing the state's 23rd district. At the time of her election in 2012, she was the only woman serving in the senate at the time; she is now one of five women, all of whom rose to national prominence in 2023 for working across the aisle to oppose a six-week abortion ban in the state. She and her fellow "Sister Senators" received a JFK Profile in Courage Award® for their stand on abortion rights.

Senator Shealy is also an insurance executive, having spent four decades in the industry; for years, she was the only woman at her agency -- an experience that prepared her to step into a male-dominated South Carolina statehouse.

Senator Shealy serves as the Chair of the Senate’s Family and Veterans’ Services Committee. She has led efforts to eliminate the state income tax; to reform South Carolina’s Department of Social Services; and fought to strengthen the penalties for those who are convicted of domestic violence crimes. She was the past Chair of the S.C. Friends of Juvenile Justice and is very active in juvenile justice reform. She is also the founder of Katrina's Kids, a nonprofit that funds programs and services for children within the South Carolina foster care system.

Senator Shealy has been recognized and honored by multiple local, state and national organizations and media outlets for her work, including being named to Forbes' "50 Over 50" list in 2023.
