Founder & CEO at Society of Women Coders, Fighting Gender-Based Digital Inequality

Kavya Krishna is the founder and CEO of the Society of Women Coders (SOWCoders), a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering women and girls globally by equipping them with essential coding and technological skills. Driven by a mission to close the gender gap in tech, Krishna has created programs that foster confidence, creativity, career-readiness and financial security for women from underserved and marginalized communities.

Under Krishna’s leadership, SOWCoders has reached participants in low- and middle-income countries, offering coding workshops, mentorship, and leadership training to thousands of women and girls. Her innovative curriculum emphasizes hands-on learning and real-world application, enabling participants to develop skills in programming languages, app development, and data science.

Krishna grew up in a rural town in Rajasthan, India, and earned a computer science degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Since she founded SOWCoders in 2018, the nonprofit has trained over 4,000 girls in 57 countries; launched their own ed-tech platform; and delivered multiple successful corporate and employee engagement programs in different markets in North America, LATAM, Africa and Asia. SOWCoders has partnered with prestigious organizations like Malala Fund, American Embassy, Govt. of Belize, Liberty Latin America, Liberty Foundation Puerto Rico, Google, Deloitte, Wework, WITNY, and MOGUL. to deliver their training.

Krishna’s efforts have earned her recognition on global platforms. She has been named a Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree and been featured as a speaker at international conferences. SOWCoders was accepted into the Harvard Innovation Lab incubator and Krishna is taking graduate courses in Education Entrepreneurship at the university. Her work not only addresses the systemic barriers faced by women in technology but also champions diversity as a driver of innovation and growth.
