Keith Lockhart

Conductor of Boston Pops, Artistic Director at Brevard Music Center, Former Principal Conductor of BBC Concert Orchestra

Ever since 1995, when Keith Lockhart was named the 20th conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra, he has significantly expanded the activities and appeal of the orchestra. Over his tenure exceeding 25 years, he has conducted the Boston Pops in more than 2,000 concerts, introduced the innovative JazzFest and EdgeFest series, featuring prominent jazz and indie artists performing with the Pops, and embarked on 45 national tours and four international tours. The annual July Fourth Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular under his direction draws over half a million live spectators and millions more through television and webcasts.

Lockhart has conducted numerous high-profile events including the pregame show of Super Bowl XXXVI, the 2008 NBA finals, the 2013 Boston Red Sox Ring Ceremony, and Game 2 of the 2018 World Series. He has also made a significant mark in televised events, having shaped 35 new programs for PBS's "Evening at Pops," and participated in celebrated concerts like the 2002 Winter Olympic Games opening exercises with the Utah Symphony. Adding to his broad directorial portfolio, Lockhart led opera productions including his debut with the Boston Lyric Opera conducting "Tosca" in 2004. On October 1, 2007, Lockhart assumed the role of Artistic Director at the Brevard Music Center, succeeding David Effron, and greatly influencing its growth and direction.

Lockhart's international stance was further solidified with his role from 2010 to 2018 as the Principal Conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra, notably conducting during Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Concert in 2012. His contributions to music and culture have been recognized with awards such as the Bob Hope Patriot Award in 2006 and the Commonwealth Award in 2017, Massachusetts’ highest cultural honor. Lockhart has also authored the book "My Favorite Things: A Richard Rodgers Celebration," reflecting his deep connection with and contribution to the world of music. Through his engaging public talks and educational outreach, he continues to be a pivotal figure in bridging traditional and contemporary music audiences.
