Williams' music combines elements of bluegrass, folk, alternative rock, reggae, electronica/dance, jazz, funk, and other assorted genres. He is often described as a one-man jam-band due to his frequent use of live phrase looping with multiple instruments. Though primarily a solo artist, Williams has toured with several bands that include Yonder Mountain String Band, The String Cheese Incident, Umphrey's McGee and Ratdog. Williams has an audio taping policy of his performances, and for non-commercial trading of the recordings but use of any recordings for profit are prohibited.

Containing mostly solo arrangements of his early tracks, his debut album, “Freek,” was released on SCI Fidelity Records in 1994. It was followed in 1996 by, “Buzz,” which included guest appearances by Gibb Droll, Larry Keel, Noel White and others. “Spun,” his third LP, was released in 1998 and included contributions from Peter Rowan, Henry Mancini, Scott Harris and Big Country.

His 2002 album, “Laugh,” featured Tye North, Dave Watts and a horn section. “Dance,” which contained remixes of songs from “Laugh,” was issued in 2003. Also in 2003, “Home,” was released and reached #39 on the Billboard Independent Albums chart and #152 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. Home centered around his love for his hometown of Fredericksburg, Virginia and contained audio clips from his childhood within the songs

A double-disc live compilation of Williams's 2003 tour, “Stage,” was released in 2005. The collection included a wide range of covers including songs by Grateful Dead, Buffalo Springfield, David Bowie & Queen, Van Morrison, Sugar Hill Gang and Michael Jackson. It was his second consecutive record to reach #39 on the Billboard Independent Albums chart.

Credited to Keller & The Keels, Williams teamed with husband and wife duo named Larry and Jenny Keel for 2006’s “Grass.” Larry Keel, Keller's childhood friend, played lead guitar while Jenny Keel played bass. The album featured covers of songs by Tom Petty, Pink Floyd, the Yonder Mountain String Band and Grateful Dead.

A slew of musicians joined Williams for his 2007 album titled “Dream.” Among the guest artists included Victor Wooton, Bela Fleck, The String Cheese Incident, Steve Kimock, Michael Franti, Charlie Hunter and Bob Weir among many others. The album peaked at #4 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers Albums chart.

Featureing one song from each of his previous 11 albums, as well as one previously un-recorded song “Freshies,” Williams released “12” in 2007. Recorded live on February 8, 2006 at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver, Colorado, “Rex (Live at the Fillmore),” was released in 2008. It was a collaborative show featuring Williams, Keith Moseley (of The String Cheese Incident) and Jeff Austin (of Yonder Mountain String Band) performing bluegrass versions of Grateful Dead songs. The group performed under the name Grateful Grass.

His next album, “Odd” was issued in 2009 and a second Keller & The Keels record, “Thief,” followed in 2010. Williams recorded and released a collection of children’s songs, “Kids” in 2010. His solo album, “Bass,” was released by SCI Fidelity in 2011.
