Kelly Marie Tran is an actress who gained global prominence for her role in the Star Wars sequel trilogy films and continued her journey with the franchise in 2019 by reprising her role as Rose Tico in Star Wars: Episode IX. The film grossed over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Tran's portrayal of Rose Tico led to her distinction as the first Asian-American woman cast in a leading role for the franchise and the first Asian woman to cover Vanity Fair.
Tran stars in Hulu’s Anthology drama series "Monsterland," based on the collection of stories from Nathan Ballingrud. She also plays the lead role of Kaitlin Le in Radiotopia's mystery thriller podcast "Passenger List." Expanding her voice acting credentials, Tran voices Dawn in DreamWorks' The Croods 2, a sequel to the Oscar-nominated animated feature about a caveman family. She also voiced Disney’s first Southeast Asian Princess, Raya, in the film Raya and the Last Dragon.
Tran's commitment to storytelling extends to her off-camera work as well. She is an executive producer on the documentary Lily Topples the World and the spoken-word poetry ensemble film Summertime. Tran is currently developing a biopic about civil rights activist and her close friend, Amanda Nguyen. She will also star in Tayarisha Poe's second feature film, The Young Wife.
In 2018, Tran starred opposite Elizabeth Olsen in Facebook Watch’s critically acclaimed original series, "Sorry for Your Loss." Tran’s past credits include the Netflix Original XOXO, TruTV’s "Adam Ruins Everything," NBC’s "About a Boy," and Lifetime’s Fall Into Me, among others. Her early credits consisted of primarily CollegeHumor videos and small TV roles, showcasing her range as an actress.
Despite achieving significant success, Tran has faced online harassment and racist attacks, leading her to delete her Instagram posts and seek therapy. She wrote an essay for The New York Times titled "Kelly Marie Tran: I Won't Be Marginalized by Online Harassment." In spite of these challenges, she has received support from her co-actors and continues to be a strong voice in the industry.
