Kevin Chen

Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University

Kevin Chen designs insect-sized robots. Among his projects is a small robot that can walk on land, walk on water, sink into the water then resurface. He's working on small robots that “swarm” – communicating with each other to perform operations like a search and rescue after a natural disaster.

His research focuses on investigating millimeter-scaled biomechanics, distilling the underlying physical principles, and applying these findings to enable novel functions in microrobots. He takes an integrated approach of combining high-throughput experiments and high-fidelity numerical simulations. He is particularly interested in studying fluid-wing interactions of flapping wing systems and incorporating this design into microrobots to enable novel functions such as swimming or walking on the water surface. Recently, he started to develop high bandwidth soft actuators for microrobotic applications.
