In 2010, Kevin Schlenker started Skar Audio from his college dorm at the University of Central Florida. The 10-employee company makes high-end speakers and amplifiers for cars and boats, selling direct-to-consumers online, as well as through a network of dealers. Schlenker—who looks to his step-uncle, Jet.com cofounder Marc Lore, for inspiration—expects revenue to exceed $11.5 million this year.
