Kimberly Blessing
kimberlyblessing.com
Kimberly Blessing has run the gamut of roles in the computing/IT industry, from software sales and tech support to Web strategist and tech manager. Through it all, the one thing she’s always loved to do is develop Web sites. Never one to shy away from a challenge, her particular specialty is fixing broken and slow Web sites.
A geek since childhood, Kimberly’s early exposure to computers (such as the TRS-80 and Commodore 64) no doubt led to her later interest in pursuing an education and career in computing. However, despite her interest in math and the sciences, a lack of encouragement from her teachers and counselors in high school had Kimberly more interested in pursuing languages and music studies. Ultimately this benefited Kimberly, as she chose to attend a liberal arts college where she rediscovered her interest in computing and was provided with a much more well-rounded undergraduate experience. It should go without saying that Kimberly is a huge proponent of both a liberal arts education and encouraging women to pursue computing and the sciences.
Kimberly is also an entrepreneur. In 1993, Kimberly launched CARNIVAL, a magazine for Duran Duran collectors. The following year, the magazine also went online, becoming one of the first Duran Duran sites on the Web. Print and online advertising brought in sufficient funds to pay for hosting and bandwidth costs that became necessary after the site was mentioned in music journals and newspapers and the influx of traffic quickly crashed the academic server the site was previously hosted on. Kimberly moved into book publishing in 1999 with the release of Confessions of the Highest Bidder by Scottish-born singer/songwriter Chris Connelly; another book is planned for release in 2005.
Computing, the Web, and publishing aren’t Kimberly’s only interests. Kimberly loves music, reading, traveling, and photography. She is also a Volkswagen enthusiast, a Ben Franklin fan, and perhaps above all else, a Philadelphian (don’t let location changes fool you).
