When Thailand flooded in 2011, landscape architect Kotchakorn Voraakhom was displaced from her home along with millions of other people. Voraakhom, a Bangkok native who studied at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design, saw an opportunity to begin to redesign the sprawling megacity of Bangkok by reintroducing green space that could help absorb water in storms to reduce flooding. At the landscape design studio she founded called Landprocess, she led the design of a park in the center of the city that doubles as a water retention facility when it rains. Her team's design for a water-absorbing "healing garden" recently opened on a hospital roof in another Thai city. Now, Voraakhom is working to bring this approach to other vulnerable communities through a social enterprise she founded called Porous City Network.
