Stefani Germanotta, known by her stage name, Lady Gaga, is an award-winning singer, songwriter, and actress. Hailing from New York, she came to prominence with her 2008 debut album The Fame which included singles such as "Just Dance" and "Pokerface." Over the course of her career, her hits have included "Bad Romance," "Alejandro," "The Edge of Glory," "You and I," and "Million Reasons."
Gaga's musical pursuits began at a young age. At age four, Lady Gaga learned piano by ear. By age 13, she had written her first piano ballad. At 14, she played open mike nights at clubs such as New York’s The Bitter End by night and was teased for her quirky, eccentric style by her Convent of the Sacred Heart School classmates by day. At age 17, she became was one of 20 kids in the world to get early admission to Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. She was signed to a label by her 20th birthday and writing songs for other artists before her debut album was even released.
Lady Gaga joined the cast of FX's hit horror-drama "American Horror Story" for its fifth season, subtitled Hotel, as the character Elizabeth. For that performance, Gaga won a Golden Globe for Best Actress.
In September 2017, Gaga: Five Foot Two was released on Netflix. The film shows Gaga in chronic pain and preparing for her Super Bowl halftime show and the release of her album Joanne.
In 2018, Lady Gaga starred alongside Bradley Cooper in the film A Star Is Born. Her contributions to the soundtrack for that film, which spawned the chart-topping single "Shallow," made her the first woman to win an Academy, Grammy, BAFTA, and Golden Globe Award in one year. Gaga returned to her dance-pop roots with her sixth studio album, 2020's Chromatica, which yielded the #1 single "Rain on Me."
In January of 2021, Gaga sang the National Anthem at President Joe Biden's inauguration.
Besides her career in music, Gaga has enhanced her repertoire as a philanthropist who has contributed to various charities and humanitarian works. Led by Gaga and her mother Cynthia Germanotta, Born This Way Foundation was founded in 2012 with the goal of creating a kinder and braver world. The foundation seeks to support the mental and emotional wellness of young people by putting their needs, ideas, and voices first.
