In 2013, his work as a journalist investigating the Affordable Care Act marketplace and Navigator program earned him the FreedomWorks 2013 Activist of the Year Award.

Lawrence attended the University of North Texas and is a native of Garland, Texas where he has served on the boards of the Garland Parks and Recreation and Dallas County Child Welfare.
