Prior to Girls, Dunham released feature film "Tiny Furniture" in 2010, for which she won an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay. Dunham’s first feature film, "Creative Nonfiction," debuted at the SXSW festival in 2009.
2014 saw the release of Dunham’s first book, "Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She's Learned," which features essays about sex and love. In 2015, along with Girls showrunner Jenni Konner, Dunham created the publication “Lenny Letter,” a feminist online newsletter. The publication ended in late 2018.
Forbes magazine named Dunham one of the "30 Under 30" and a power woman to watch for 2013. The magazine had previously featured her as a name you need to know for 2011. Time magazine included her in its 2013 Time 100 list as one of the most influential icons.
Dunham is outspoken about her various health conditions. She was diagnosed with endometriosis and shared her decision to have a hysterectomy at age 31. In 2019, Dunham took to social media to tell the world that she is living with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a chronic disease that affects the joints and skin.
