Leon Fuerth

Leon Fuerth served as Vice President Gore's National Security Adviser. During this time, he participated directly and continuously in the formation of all national foreign policy and in advising both the Vice President and the President on these matters.

He was the senior administration official responsible for the operation of bi-national commissions with Russia, Ukraine, Kazakastan, Egypt, South Africa and the US-China Environmental Forum. He was also a central figure in pushing forward the concept of an international space station based on US-Russian cooperation, and was decorated by NASA for his contributions to that project. He was also decorated by the government of Croatia for services in aid of the independence of that country. For three years, Fuerth personally directed sanctions against Serbia on behalf of the US government, as one of a number of special assignments. At instruction from President Clinton, he served as a member of key inter-agency committees at the White House level, including the Principles and Deputies Committee of both the National Security Council and the National Economic Council.

On the Hill, Fuerth worked for the late Les Aspin as sub-committee staff director in the House Select Committee on Intelligence, as well as for Al Gore during the last two years of his time as a member of the House and throughout his term in the Senate. In the course of this twelve-year period, Fuerth was the Select Committee's expert on arms control verification in addition to operating as its primary staff resource for monitoring covert action; he was deeply involved in the development of arms control positions by Congressman Gore; and served as Gore's staff link to both the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Senate Committee on Science and Technology (space sub-committee). He was responsible to Senator Gore for all aspects of national security, including international trade.

During his twelve years as a Foreign Service Officer, Fuerth served in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research, the US Consulate General in Zagreb, Yugoslavia, the Political Military Bureau in several capacities in the Bureau of European Affairs. He became a known resource for strategic intelligence (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear weapons) arms control, Soviet and Warsaw Pact affairs and NATO.

Fuerth's career in government spanned thirty years, including the State Department, the House, Senate and the White House.

Retiring from government service at the conclusion of the Clinton Administration, Fuerth is currently the Shapiro Visiting Professor of International Relations at the George Washington University. He has published a number of op-eds in The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times and The Washington Post, and has published essays in the Washington Quarterly and the Blueprint (a publication of the Democratic Leadership Council). Fuerth is currently serving as a member of the CIA's advisory intelligence board, at the invitation of its director. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and has spoken before its membership in New York and in Washington DC. He remains active in commercial space issues, as a member of the Board of International Launch Services, which is a joint venture between Lockheed and several major Russian space launch enterprises.
