Resigning from the Biden Administration: A Story of Transformation and Sacrifice

Sometimes the way you can make the most change is by giving something up.

On May 15, 2024, Lily Greenberg Call became the first Jewish political appointee to resign from the Biden Administration in protest of the administration’s policy on the war in Gaza. A rising star in Democratic politics, she resigned from a coveted appointee position, risking personal relationships in a decision she knew would isolate her from many people in her community. As the war in Gaza took more and more innocent lives, Lily realized that the way she could be most impactful to changing the narrative and stopping the violence was through a public resignation.

Her resignation came after months of attempting to use her experience as a Jewish person with both Israeli and Palestinian loved ones, who was impacted by the events of October 7th, to convince the administration to change course.

Lily shares her story of growing up deeply embedded in Jewish community, doing pro-Israel advocacy for years, and the experiences that exposed her to the Palestinian narrative and the reality of life for Palestinians under military occupation. Her story is a testament to the power of transformation, change, and inter-communal solidarity to create real change and lasting peace.
