Lisa Murkowski

United States Senator from Alaska

Lisa Murkowski is a longstanding figure in American politics, with her career punctuated by numerous notable achievements. The senior United States Senator from Alaska since 2002, she is also the first woman to have represented Alaska in the Senate. Her political journey has not been without controversy, notably when she was appointed to the Senate by her father, who had resigned his seat to become the governor of Alaska. Regardless, she navigated the political landscape with determination, even running as a write-in candidate and emerging victorious in the 2010 general election after losing the Republican primary, making her the second U.S. senator to be elected by write-in vote.

Murkowski's political prowess is evident in her leadership roles, having served as the vice chair of the Senate Republican Conference and chair of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. Currently, she is the vice chair of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. Known as one of the Senate's most moderate Republicans, she is often considered a crucial swing vote. Her voting record shows a balance of bipartisan cooperation, having voted with President Barack Obama's position 72.3% of the time in 2013 and against some of her party's own nominees to the Supreme Court.

Her commitment to public service extends beyond politics. A graduate of Willamette University's College of Law, Murkowski was involved in Alaska politics for many years, filling Senate seats and making significant contributions to the state's legislative landscape. Despite facing challenging races and a property sale controversy in 2007, she has persevered, underlining her resilience and dedication to her role. As a public figure, Murkowski has consistently demonstrated her ability to tackle difficult issues, make informed decisions, and communicate her stance effectively, making her a valued public speaker on a range of topics.
