For nearly forty years, Lisa Witter has been learning about, living and teaching leadership. It started as a response to a gun violence epidemic in her community as a child, and has spanned her lifetime working with scientists, CEOs, entrepreneurs, investors, philanthropists, and politicians around the world.
As a serial entrepreneur, she currently applies this expertise as the CEO and co-founder of the Apolitical Foundation, whose mission is to help cultivate courageous and effective 21st century political leaders. She is the co-founder and board member of Apolitical, a global peer-to-peer learning platform, used by 175k+ public servants in 170 countries. Apolitical was named one of Fast Company’s “Most Innovative Companies in the World”.
Witter is a regular public speaker who hails from the Pacific Northwest, is half New Yorker and now lives in Berlin. She is both a city-slicker and has been an outdoors junkie from birth. For the last decade, she has been co-leading special ‘climate leadership’ expeditions to Greenland, alongside serving as a leadership coach and trainer for National Geographic for 15+ years.
She’s a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader and has co-chaired the Forum’s Council on Agile Governance, as well as served on their Brain and Behavior Council. She is an author, a former public servant with deep experience in behavioral science, and the founder of numerous political leadership incubators over the last 25 years. In recognition of her work, she was awarded the 2020 Creative Bureaucracy Award and was named a BMW Foundation Futurity Fellow in 2022.
Her formal studies were at the University of California Santa Cruz, the University of Washington, Yale and Harvard, but she identifies more with an obsessively curious autodidact. She is a certified NeuroLeadership coach and is currently exploring writing a book on what nature can teach us about leadership (especially in the days of AI).
