Liz Cambage
3-Time WNBA All-Star & First Woman to Dunk in the Olympics; Playboy Model & ESPN Body Issue Cover Athlete
Elizabeth Cambage is an Australian professional basketball player for the Las Vegas Aces of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) and the Australian Opals. Cambage currently holds the WNBA single-game scoring record with her 53-point performance against the New York Liberty on 17 July 2018.
Cambage was born on in London to a Nigerian father and Australian mother. Her parents separated when Cambage was three months old and she moved to Australia with her mother. First settling in Coffs Harbour in New South Wales, the family moved to Melbourne when Cambage was 10 years of age and later the Mornington Peninsula.
Cambage is 6 ft 8 in tall. She was teased about her height in school. At the age of ten she was 6 ft tall, reaching 6'5" by the time she was 14. She started playing basketball at her mother's suggestion when she was 10 as a way to make friends.
One of the brightest young stars in Australian sport, Cambage has announced herself as the face of the next generation of talent to lead the Australian Opals into a new era. Emerging on national team scene in 2008, Cambage quickly established herself as an Opals regular, earning selection for the 2010 FIBA World Championships.
It was her performances for the Bulleen Boomers that drew major plaudits, helping the team win their first WNBL Championship in club history and claim the 2011 WNBL MVP. If that wasn’t enough, Cambage joined the growing number of Australians in the WNBA, taken at number two overall by the Tulsa Shock in the 2011 WNBA Draft.
The eyes of the world were on Cambage in London as she became the first player ever to dunk in women’s Olympic competition on her way to helping the Opals win the bronze medal at the 2012 Olympic Games.
Liz is an advocate for mental health awareness and body positivity, and has made a point of being open about her journey, hoping it will help others. But talking about it also serves to remind herself that self-care is something she must always work at and tend to.
