Award Winning Photographer & Visual Artist

Lorna Simpson is a photographer and visual artist whose work focuses primarily on race and sexuality. An African-American woman, Simpson examines black women's experiences in American society and culture. She has worked in documentary photography, film installations, and multimedia compilations.

Simpson started doing art shows in the 1980s and remains an active artist today. She has received numerous awards for her work, including a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, a Louis Comfort Tiffany Award, and the Whitney Museum of American Art Award.She has served as an Artist -in-Residence at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Ohio as well as at Colgate University. In 1998 Simpson was a finalist for the Hugo Boss Prize, and in 2014 she was shortlisted for the Deutsche Borse Photography Prize.
