Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (born 27 October 1945, known popularly as Lula), is a Brazilian politician.

He was a founding member of the Workers' Party (PT – Partido dos Trabalhadores) and ran for president three times unsuccessfully, first in the 1989 election, then again in 1994 and 1998. Lula achieved victory in the 2002 election, and was inaugurated as president on 1 January 2003. In the 2006 election he was elected for a second term as president, which ended on 1 January 2011. He was succeeded by his former Chief of Staff, Dilma Rousseff.

President of the Federative Republic of Brazil between 2003 and 2010, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva kept in his personal and political career, a strong commitment to democracy, reducing poverty, hunger and eradicating misery.

In February 10, 1980, Lula helped found the Workers Party, the union representing hundreds of thousands of people involved with labour movements, the base of ecclesial communities from the Catholic Church, left wing groups and intellectuals.

In 1984, Lula participated as one of the main leaders of the campaign for direct elections, "Diretas-já", for President of the Republic. In 1986 he was elected the most voted federal congressman of the country at the Constituent Assembly.

At the end of his second term as President of the Republic, the Institute for Citizenship - where Lula discussed and elaborated, together with members of the people, public political proposals before being elected president – became the Lula Institute, which will responsible for the historical aspects and for the exchange of the international political experiences of the former president.
