Maddy Banic
Member of International Swim League’s Energy Standard, Olympic Trials Qualifier, Eight-Time NCAA All-American, American Record Holder & Mental Health Advocate
Maddy Banic, who some of her friends call Maddog, a nickname given to her as an age group swimmer, is a 23 year old professional swimmer who specializes in sprint fly and free. Banic started YMCA level swimming when she was 9, however she did not start taking swimming seriously until her junior year of high school when she joined a USA level club. Banic was recruited to the University of Tennessee where she got her degree in Kinesiology. During her time at Tennessee, she became a 9x-SEC Conference Champion and an NCAA Champion her senior year in the 200 medley relay. Her first professional year out of college she was a member of the LA Current ISL team for the end of season meets. This 2020 season, she had a breakout ISL season with Energy Standard.
Banic had a rocky road throughout high school and the beginning of college. She was officially diagnosed with depression and anxiety the summer of 2016, and ended up leaving UT and the sport of swimming to get professional help after a near suicide attempt in 2017. She came back from treatment with a new passion for life and swimming, determined to be the best version of herself. Returning to swimming was a challenge in and of itself with NCAA rules and bridges burned, but she was relentless and came back stronger than ever to become a captain her senior year. After her last NCAAs, she left the sport, ready to move on to her next chapter. After 3 months of normal life, she felt called back to the water. She wasn't happy with how she left the sport and felt she had so much more to give. She returned to the pool with the fire ignited once again.
