US Professional Show Jumping-Equestrian Athlete & Entrepreneur and Owner of Rhema Sporthorses

Malachi Hinton is a US Professional Show Jumping-Equestrian Athlete, entrepreneur, and Owner of Rhema Sporthorses, a sport horse investment and competition stable. She is originally from Newport News, VA and began her riding career at the age of nine within a small inner city riding program in Hampton Roads. Hinton began learning how to be a competitor on the local hunter/jumper/equitation circuit. And upon studying the sport online, she realized her passion for elite level show jumping and worked her way onto the national stage.

Show jumping is an elite sport with a global audience and a billion-dollar industry that shares many similarities with Formula One, Golf, and Tennis. It is a unique sport where both men and women compete on equal playing fields and has expanded exponentially with multiple seven-figure purses, destination tours, leagues, and competitions being offered across the United States and throughout the world in addition to being a well-established Olympic Sport.

Hinton is one of few African American riders to compete among the upper levels of show jumping sport. She follows in the footsteps of Charles "Sonny” Brooks", a prominent Show Jumper in the 1950s and 60s that won several titles including an award to be presented by President Kennedy, but was not invited to the ceremony because of the color of his skin; and Donna Cheek, who graced the cover of Jet Magazine in the 1980s and was the first African American selected for a National US Equestrian Team but could not compete due to lack of financial backing.

Hinton has trained with several top professionals throughout her career including Irish Olympic Veteran Kevin Babington, US Olympic Veteran Peter Leone, US Professionals Kristen Vanderveen.

Her accomplishments include an extensive career thus far on her mount F15, a European import purchased by a group of diverse business professionals. Together, Hinton and garnered wins and placings at the upper level of the sport at prominent shows such as the Devon Horse Show in Devon, Pennsylvania, Tryon International in Mill Spring, North Carolina, HITS Culpeper in Culpeper, Virginia.

Hinton graduated Magna Cum Laude from George Mason University in Spring 2020 with a bachelor’s degree in Community Health-Clinical Sciences. And although she had interest in the study of medicine, her passion and career are within equestrian sport. She competes at the national level with a focus on furthering her professional career among the National Grand Prix and International (FEI) Grand Prix levels with her eyes set on competing for Team USA within major national-international competition and many future Olympic Games.

One of the most important components of the success of riders within the sport is having the support of a strong team of horse owners and sponsors. Hinton and her team of horse investors have been one of the first ownership groups consisting of African American business professionals. Her team was recently featured in Essence, Hinton strongly believes that her involvement in the sport of showjumping will be impactful, and she aims to create more diverse opportunities at the highest level of the sport.

Hinton continues to pursue the highest level of the sport, grow her team of elite level equine athletes, owners and sponsors, and share the business, sports, and life knowledge that she has gained on her journey.
