Born in the Dominican Republic in 1984, Manuel de los Santos has become one of the most inspirational figures in sport and a universal symbol of triumph over adversity.

Although Manuel was a capable student, his love of sport and particularly baseball was overpowering and he aimed to make his fortune as a professional ballplayer. At 17 years old, he had enormous potential and won a trial with the Toronto Blue Jays in Canada. However, his dream was brought to a shuddering end the day he was struck by a car while riding his motorcycle near his home. Four days later, he awoke from a coma to find that his left leg had been amputated above the knee.

One month after the operation, Manuel left his home with his new wife Elena and started a new life with her in Paris where he received better medical care and attempted to rekindle his optimistic attitude. Then Manuel watched The Legend of Bagger Vance, a film about a golfer overcoming adversity, and was inspired. He went to the driving range the next day and became hooked. He found that his natural timing had not left him and he was able to keep his balance well.

Unable to stay away from the course, Manuel played every day, often from 9am until dark. His commitment and dedication to the game impressed everyone who saw him and he quickly improved. Seven years later, Manuel plays off a handicap of just 3 and has been invited to compete in some of the world’s biggest events, including the Alfred Dunhill Links in 2009 where he amazed fellow players and spectators alike. He is now the #2 disabled golfer in Europe and has won many tournaments including the highly regarded Swedish Invitational Open.
