Marc Andreessen

Computer Programmer, Co-Author of Mosaic & Venture Capitalist; Co-Founder & General Partner at Andreessen Horowitz

Marc Andreessen is a computer programmer and venture capitalist who played a significant role in shaping the Internet as we know it today. A key figure in the development of the web browser, Andreessen co-authored Mosaic, the first widely used web browser with a graphical user interface. His entrepreneurial prowess was further showcased when he co-founded Netscape, a pioneering company in the world of web browsers. Andreessen's foray into the business world didn't stop there; he co-founded and served as a general partner of the Silicon Valley venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, which grew from an initial capitalization of $300 million to $2.7 billion under management across three funds.

Andreessen's keen eye for promising ventures has led him to invest in successful companies such as Facebook, Foursquare, GitHub, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and Twitter. His advisory role to the leaders of these companies, such as Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook, underscores his significance in the tech industry. Andreessen's contributions haven't gone unnoticed, as he was named one of the top 100 innovators in the world under the age of 35 by MIT Technology Review and was featured on the cover of Time magazine. He was inducted into the World Wide Web Hall of Fame in 1994, and in 2012, he was named in the Time 100, an annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Andreessen's influence extends beyond the tech industry; he served on the eBay board of directors for six years and was appointed to the Homeland Security Advisory Council by Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas in March 2022. Furthermore, he has used his platform to suggest technological and cultural solutions to global issues, as seen in his April 2020 opinion article "It's time to build," which addressed the COVID-19 pandemic.
