Van Herpen co-founded NIVOZ, a Dutch institute for education and learning. He established the first experiential education school in the Netherlands in 1990, giving him a breadth of experience in this area. In 1995 he began an experiential education program in the Caribbean nation of St. Maarten. In this vein, he also founded the Centre for Sustainable Educating and Development.
