Marcus Ryu, a veteran entrepreneur and startup advisor, joined Battery Ventures as a partner in 2022, focusing on early- and growth-stage technology investments with a focus on fintech, data services, and vertical enterprise applications.

He is actively involved with Battery’s investments in companies like Fairmatic and hyperexponential. Ryu co-founded Guidewire Software in 2001 and led it as CEO until 2019, growing it into a leading provider for the global property-casualty insurance industry with a cloud-based platform. He continues to serve on Guidewire’s board as an independent director.

Before co-founding Guidewire, Ryu held roles as an engagement manager at McKinsey & Co. and vice president of strategy at Ariba. He also serves on the boards of Checkr, Bloomreach, Bestow, and several other companies and previously held board roles with MuleSoft, Opower, and Procore Technologies. Ryu holds an A.B. from Princeton University and a B.Phil. from Oxford University as a Marshall Scholar.

Based in San Francisco, he shares a passion for board games with his wife, Julia, and enjoys designing games in his spare time.
