Marika Anthony-Shaw

Arcade Fire Instrumentalist & Founder of the Social Entrepreneur Platform "Plus1"

When Marika Anthony-Shaw found herself in the spotlight, she saw an opportunity to shine that light on a cause close to her heart--the people of Haiti. Anthony-Shaw and her band, Arcade Fire, have used their fame as Grammy Award winners to drum up support for Haiti to the tune of $500,000 in donations.

Anthony-Shaw is also using her famous voice to speak out for those people who lost what little they had in the 2010 earthquake that decimated the island nation. She and the band have been sharing lectures on "Hope, Haiti and Service" with audiences who love Arcade Fire but may not know much about all of their philanthropic work. As part of the band's commitment, they started donating $1 per concert ticket sold to Haiti and developed the Arcade Fire Haiti Outreach program. This program--including its long-standing partnership with Partners in Health, its support of the KANPE Foundation, and its initiatives for artists in Haiti--encourages fans to become active through the "I STAND WITH HAITI" campaign and through fundraising efforts. To date, Arcade Fire has trained nearly 1,000 volunteers and engaged over 40,000 fans in the campaign.

The band hopes that its advocacy will lead to progress in Haiti that will benefit the country 20 or 60 years down the road. With eloquence and dedication, Anthony-Shaw brings her infectious passion for helping others to audiences seeking to make a real difference through the power of hope and positive action.

Anthony-Shaw is available in partnership with Collective Speakers.
