Mark F. Twight

Alpine Mountaineer, Writer, Photographer & Founder of Gym Jones

Mark F. Twight is an American climber, writer, and the founder of Gym Jones. He rose to prominence as a mountaineer in the late 1980s and early 1990s with a series of difficult, dangerous alpine climbs in various ranges around the world, including the Canadian Rockies, Mont Blanc massif, Himalayas, and Alaska Range. His radical, lightweight approach to alpinism has seen him regarded as an influential figure in the single-push movement. He was nominated for the Piolet d'Or twice during his career and received the Robert and Miriam Underhill Award from the American Alpine Club in 2017.

Aside from his mountaineering exploits, Twight also made notable contributions in various fields. He has written several books on climbing, including "Waterfall Ice: Climbs In The Canadian Rockies," "Extreme Alpinism: Climbing, Light, Fast And High" as well as "Kiss or Kill – Confessions of a Serial Climber." He is also a competitive pistol shooter and a road cyclist, and he is associated with USA Cycling. His works have been featured in the American Alpine Journal and other publications like Outside Online and Men's Journal. Currently, Twight spends most of his creative energy on and around NonProphet, a small project where he and his business partner publish books, semi-annual Zines, the NonProphet Podcast, and training programs.

In addition to his mountaineering and writing career, Twight is known for his fitness training involvement. He founded Gym Jones, where he trained athletes, military personnel, actors, and others. His expertise in fitness and conditioning led him to train the cast and stunt crew for the movie "300." Since then, he has continued to train actors for movie roles through Gym Jones, with credits in movies such as "Man of Steel," "300: Rise of an Empire," "Batman vs. Superman," "Wonder Woman," and "Justice League." Twight also consulted as the technical director of Mountain Mobility Group, LLC, which provides training and R&D for the Department of Defense. He was hired as the subject matter expert during the development of the Protective Combat Uniform currently issued to special operations personnel.
