Mark Norton

A speaker whose message of personal responsibility regarding safety is succint, powerful and inspirational with just the right amount of humor mixed in.

With almost 30 years in the safety & health field Mark Norton was first introduced to the concept of safety and health as a profession while working in the United States Coast Guard, where he was a Preventive Medicine Technician specializing in occupational safety and health, while doubling as a Flight Rescue Medic. After almost eight years in that capacity he sustained a career ending injury and found himself married, with two small children and unemployed!

Pushing forward, Mark eventually landed a position with the State OSHA program in Arizona, specifically in Tucson, his hometown. In this capacity he excelled, working for over 23 years and rising to the position of Assistant Director. The first Assistant Director ever appointed to the Southern Arizona Region. At the age of 38 while working two jobs and raising two teenagers, Mark began the process of fulfilling his lifelong goal of completing his college education. He has since completed a Bachelor of Science in Business and Masters of Arts in Organizational Management.

Mark is a Member of the National Speakers Association, American Society of Safety Engineers and recipient of the 2008 Voluntary Protection Program Participants Association, (VPPPA) National Chairman's Award, 2009 ASSE Chapter Safety Professional of the Year, Community Service Public Excellence Award, Mayor of Tucson, and the Coast Guard Achievement Medal for his efforts in Occupational Safety & Health while on active duty, and several other state and local awards. He is a previous Region IX representative on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Occupational Safety & Health Managers or OSHCON.

Mark subscribes to the belief that anyone can accomplish whatever they set their mind to if they do the work. He believes that you "create your own value" whether it be in the home, the workplace or in your social setting. He loves to meet people from all walks of life and enjoys teaching. Most of all Mark enjoys sharing the lessons he has learned over the past 30 years, and delivering his message regarding individual roles and responsibilities in the workplace safety and health management system. He speaks at many state, regional and national conventions, and well as corporate safety events, addressing thousands of stakeholders every year on the subject of Occupational Safety & Health. Mark has published two books on the issue of workplace safety and health, the first entitled "It's Not My Job!" and the second "If You Could See What I See", delivering the powerful message within, to audiences across the United States and Canada. In his spare time he loves to write poetry and practice his guitar playing.

Mark has extensive experience on a variety of OSHA related issues, Safety & Health Management Systems, Voluntary Protection Program and many other safety related topics and would love to speak to your stakeholders.
