Mellman has helped guide the campaigns of a dozen U.S. Senators, over a dozen Member of Congress, three Governors as well as numerous state and local officials. Mellman also provided research and strategic guidance to Cesar Gaviria in his successful campaign for the Presidency of Colombia in 1990 and to the Louisiana Democratic Party in the successful effort to defeat David Duke. He has also traveled to Russia to train members of Boris Yeltsin's inner circle in political tactics. In addition, Mellman works with a variety of public interest organizations ranging from the Children's Defense Fund to the AFL-CIO, the Nature Conservancy, and the League of Women Voters.

When Democratic National Chairman Ron Brown called the party's Congressional leaders and Presidential candidates together at the Middleburg Summit, he turned to Mellman to conduct the polling and brief the attendees, including Bill Clinton, who was then contemplating a Presidential campaign. In fact, Mellman was the only political consultant invited to this key meeting. Mellman also provides regular briefings to the Democratic leadership in the House and Senate, as well as to the nation's Democratic governors.

Mellman received his undergraduate degree from Princeton and graduate degrees from Yale where he taught in the Political Science department. He is currently on the faculty of the Graduate School of Political Management, a contributing analyst for the Hotline of American Politics, and on the editorial board of Campaigns & Elections. During the political year, Mellman offered weekly political commentary for Fox Television News and is regularly sought out by other news organizations for his views on political trends.
