Mark Silberg

Senior Associate at Rocky Mountain Institute; Founder of Spark Clean Energy

Mark Silberg is a senior associate at Rocky Mountain Institute. He was a founder of Spark Clean Energy, a nonprofit that ran the U.S. Department of Energy’s Cleantech University Prize. He has published research on environmental ethics, innovation in the electricity sector, and the political economy of climate change. Silberg joined Rocky Mountain Institute in 2015 as the first eLab Network Manager, leading external engagement for the Electricity Innovation Lab, quadrupling the reach of that learning platform in two years and architecting eLab’s flagship events: eLab Summit and eLab Accelerator.

Prior to beginning his work at Rocky Mountain Institute, Silberg served as a researcher in energy economics and policy with Dr. Lynne Kiesling at Northwestern University. Their studies explored how market structures and regulatory design influence technological experimentation in the electricity sector. Additionally, Silberg was a Research Analyst for E9 Energy Insight, an information service focused on the leading areas of new clean energy and consumer technologies transforming the utility industry. His analyses centered on state-level regulatory overviews on subjects related to grid modernization, resiliency, and market design for clients ranging from CERES to the U.S. Department of Energy, Mission Data, and others. He has spent time at the Center for Environmental Initiatives, Clean Energy Trust, and The Sustainability Exchange.

Previous research projects focused on environmental ethics, fuel poverty, and the history of international climate change negotiation– concluding with the book Changing Climate Politics; U.S. Policies and Civic Action (Yael Wolinsky-Nahmias, Editor; CQ Press, 2014). He is an advisor to Engineers for a Sustainable World and Energy Thought Summit.

In 2014, Silberg graduated Phi Beta Kappa in Philosophy from Northwestern University, minoring in Environmental Policy and Culture with certification in Energy and Sustainability. His honors thesis focused on environmental ethics, inter-spatial and inter-generational technology transfer, and climate change policy and political economy. While at Northwestern, Silberg founded the Energy and Sustainability Consortium, the student government's Sustainability Committee, and the university's $50,000 Sustainability Fund. He is passionate about collaborating with people and advancing new technologies and policies to solve society’s most challenging existential risks.
