Matt Lerner is the London-based Partner with Silicon Valley VC fund 500 Startups, overseeing their investing in Europe. He has backed over 30 early-stage startups, and runs their UK-based “growth hacking” program for seed-stage companies.

In 2004, after exiting his previous startup, Lerner joined PayPal and worked on growth projects with members of the original “PayPal Mafia.” He remained at PayPal, working as a Marketing Director building and leading teams that helped PayPal grow from an $800M business to an $8B business. In 2012 he moved to London to become PayPal’s Head of UK SME, an $800M business in its own right.

Before joining PayPal, he held marketing roles with three other startups. As a growth marketer, he specializes in conversion optimization, analytics, engagement and retention.

Lerner occasionally lectures on “growth hacking" at Stanford Business School and Imperial college, and speaks regularly at European technology, investing and marketing conferences.
