Matt Salzberg is the co-founder and CEO of Blue Apron, an ingredient-and-recipe meal kit service, and co-founder of Embark Vet, which provides comprehensive genetic testing for dogs.
In the summer of 2012, Salzberg, along with Ilia Papas and Matt Wadiak, tested the first Blue Apron recipes in their tiny New York City apartments. Their goal was to make the experience of cooking with quality produce and specialty ingredients accessible to everyone, no matter where they live or how busy they are. The three hand-picked the first Blue Apron boxes themselves delivered them to family and friends and received immediate positive feedback.
Years later, Blue Apron has expanded tremendously and as a team, we work every day to live and breath our mission. Sending over 3 million meals per month to our home chefs nationwide, and we have thousands of employees that work across four offices to ensure each customer gets the highest quality product every week.
Worn by apprentice chefs in France, the Blue Apron has become a symbol of lifelong learning in cooking. Since the beginning, the entire Blue Apron team has been awed by the dedication of our customers to their culinary education. We’re thrilled to be welcomed into our customers' homes and part of their weekly cooking routine.
Before founding Blue Apron, Salzberg was a venture capital investor at Bessemer Venture Partners, where he focused on the Internet, software, and mobile sectors. He started his career as an analyst in the Blackstone Group’s private equity division, where he stayed until shortly after its IPO.There, he was involved in several transactions including the take-private of Nielsen and the dividend recapitalization of Centennial.Salzberg also worked in Blackstone’s Hong Kong office where he evaluated investments in the Thai, Indonesian and Australian markets.
Matt holds a B.A. in economics, summa cum laude, and an MBA, both from Harvard University. While pursuing his undergraduate degree, Matt served on the Board of Directors of Harvard Student Agencies and ran its laundry, dry-cleaning and linen-rental business, winning Manager of the Year for turning around its performance. He also currently serves on the Board of Directors of SelectMinds, a social job recruiting company. His favorite research projects on Petridsh include Astronomy, Archaeology, Marine Biology and Economics.
