Melanie Benjamin

Bestselling Author, Library and Book Club Favorite

Author Melanie Benjamin is a natural public speaker. A debate champion in college with a lifelong interest in theater, she is at home in front of audiences of all types. Melanie came to writing as a second career after her last child was leaving home and she has been publishing novels ever since. Her first novel with Random House, Alice I Have Been, explores the real story of Alice Liddell, the inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. In this imaginative work, Melanie animates this fascinating and complex character, from her girlhood as the daughter of the Master at Christ Church College, Oxford University, and friend to Lewis Carroll, to her adulthood and ripe old age. Her novel, The Autobiography of Mrs. Tom Thumb tells the extraordinary story of tiny Mercy Lavinia “Vinnie” Bump, a member of P.T. Barnum’s circus family and the wife of superstar General Tom Thumb. In her recent novel, The Aviator’s Wife, Melanie portrays one of the most iconic women in American history, Anne Morrow Lindbergh. Daughter of the American Ambassador to Mexico, wife to Charles Lindbergh, mother, writer and aviatrix, her story, set against the backdrop of pivotal moments in history provides a rich tapestry for a novel and a perfect subject for Melanie.

Melanie lives in Chicago and has appeared at the Southern Festival of Books, The James Thurber House, The Dallas Museum of Art and many libraries around the country.
