Meldon Hollis Jr.
Former Associate Director at the White House Initiative on HBCUs; Professor at Savannah State University & Historian
Mr. Meldon S. Hollis, Jr., has just recently joined the staff at the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) for the second time. He comes to the Initiative from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), where he had worked since September 2005. At FEMA, he served in various positions including coordinator for Intergovernmental Affairs in the External Affairs Division; program officer in the Individual Assistance Division; and program officer in the Policy and Procedures Branch of the Public Assistance Division.
Hollis has held senior governmental positions at the municipal, State, and Federal levels. He has served as vice president for University Relations at Texas Southern University and as a university administrator at Harvard and the University of Maryland at College Park. He has taught on the faculty of Northeastern University, the University of Maryland, and Howard University.
Hollis has served on the Board of Directors of Friends of the National Zoo in Washington, DC, the Board of Trustees of the Massachusetts Bay Community College, and as a court-appointed Special Advocate for Abused and Abandoned Children in Northern Virginia. Hollis has served as a member and as president of the Baltimore City School Board, chairman of the board of the Baltimore Urban League, and as a talk show host on WEAA-FM in Baltimore for 9 years.
Prior to joining FEMA, Hollis taught government and political science at Howard University. Over a 35-year work history, he has served in the Army Security Agency; as special assistant to the Assistant Secretary for Education in the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare; as director of the White House Initiative on HBCUs; as an attorney; and as a business consultant. In 1965, while enlisted in the Army, Hollis received a Presidential nomination to and attended the United States Military Academy at West Point.
Hollis holds an M.A. in government and politics from the University of Maryland at College Park, and a J.D. and M.P.A. from Harvard University. He has studied international law and indigenous courts at the University of Legon in Ghana, West Africa.
