In the rare instances disabled characters are depicted onscreen, they're oftentimes portrayed by able-bodied actors. Not so with JJ DiMeo, Fowler's character on ABC's "Speechless." Born with cerebral palsy, Fowler plays a teenager with the same condition who is unable to speak. He is also an ambassador for the Cerebral Palsy Foundation.
