Mike Fries is President and Chief Executive Officer of Liberty Global, Inc. (LGI). A 27-year veteran of the cable and media industry, he has spent nearly his entire career building international distribution and programming businesses. Today LGI is the second largest cable TV operator in the world and the largest outside the U.S. with over 34 million video, voice, and broadband internet subscribers, operations in 13 countries and $10.1 billion of revenue1.
LGI was created through the combination of Liberty Media International, Inc. and UnitedGlobalCom, Inc. in June 2005. Prior to the formation of LGI and his appointment as CEO, Mr. Fries served as president and chief executive officer of UnitedGlobalCom, Inc. (UGC), one of the first companies to expand into international cable TV and programming. He joined UGC’s predecessor in 1990 shortly after its formation and spent five years as senior vice president, business development during which he was responsible for managing global acquisitions and new business development functions. In 1995, he became president of the Asia/Pacific division and was promoted to president and chief operating officer of UGC in 1998 and chief executive officer in 2004. During this period he oversaw UGC’s growth across all business units and geographic territories into a leading international broadband communications provider.
Mr. Fries is a member of Liberty Global's board of directors and its two-person executive committee along with the company’s chairman, Dr. John C. Malone. He is an active industry partner and Telecom Governor of the World Economic Forum and a member of Young Presidents Organization. He also serves as a trustee or board member of a number of professional and philanthropic organizations including CableLabs®, The Cable Center, Denver Museum of Contemporary Art - Denver, the Denver Biennial of the Americas (Platform 5280), the Alliance for Choice in Education and Teach for America, among others. He was recognized as Communications Executive of the Year (2010) by Communications Technology Professionals, Industry Leader of the Year (2010) by Digital TV Europe, and honored by Ernst & Young as the U.S. National Entrepreneur of the Year in Media, Entertainment, and Communications (2012). In June 2011, Mr. Fries was inducted into Cable Television Pioneers association.
Mr. Fries holds a B.A. from Wesleyan University (where he is a member of the President’s Advisory Council) and an M.B.A. from Columbia University. He lives in Denver with his wife and two young daughters and is an avid skier, golfer, surfer, and biker.
