Michael Tubbs
Former Stockton Councilman, Truman Scholar, Architect of Peace
Michael Tubbs, a devoted son of Stockton, was born to a teenage mother and an incarcerated father. His journey took him from challenging beginnings to graduating from Stanford University with honors in his bachelor's degree and a master's in Policy, Organization, and Leadership Studies. Tubbs' academic and personal experiences have uniquely prepared him to contribute meaningfully to the community that raised him.
Tubbs has been deeply involved in the betterment of the Stockton community, serving on various city boards and commissions, including a two-year term as Chairman of the Youth Advisory Commission. In response to rising crime rates, he co-initiated Save Our Stockton, leading to the establishment of a mayoral task force on youth and crime. His commitment to education is evident through his organization of a "Back to School" tour at Stagg and Franklin High Schools and his co-founding of the Summer Success and Leadership Academy at the University of the Pacific, which equips local youth to address community issues. Tubbs also contributed to national policy during his tenure at the White House, where he assisted in forming strategies for federal engagement with mayors and city councils across the country.
Tubbs, an International Baccalaureate graduate from Franklin High School, received a full scholarship to Stanford University. He has actively contributed to various organizations, including serving on Stanford University's Board of Trustees Development Committee, working with the Children's Defense Fund to dismantle the Cradle to Prison Pipeline, and presiding over Stanford's NAACP chapter. Additionally, he holds positions on the alumni advisory boards of both the Stanford Black Community Services and the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. As the Founder and Executive Director of The Phoenix Scholars, Tubbs has significantly impacted over 300 students across California, helping them gain college admissions. His efforts have earned him recognition as a City of Stockton Architect of Peace and a Truman Scholar for his dedication to public service, as well as being a finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship.
Driven by a passion to foster positive change and create opportunities for his community, Tubbs embraces the challenges of his role as councilman for District 6 in Stockton. His life and career are testament to his commitment to public service and community leadership.
