Biography

Former U.S. Department of Justice attorney and Harvard Law School graduate Michael Johnson speaks on how to prevent, spot, and follow up on deception when:

· Conducting investigative interviews

· Interviewing and hiring employees

· Negotiating business deals

· Analyzing corporate earnings statements, or

· Otherwise communicating with people face-to-face, by phone, or online.

In his highly engaging and humorous sessions, he shows videos of interviews and helps the audience spot reliable cues to deception while exposing several myths about lie detection.

Michael has trained thousands of people on skills for detecting deception, including presenting at dozens of conferences for human resource professionals, compliance officers, auditors, fraud examiners, loss prevention specialists, law enforcement officers, and other business executives. He has provided numerous client-specific sessions for international organizations such as the United Nations (in New York, Congo, and Sierra Leone) and the World Bank, government agencies such as the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and Maryland State Police, and companies such as Boeing, the Coca-Cola Company, Lockheed Martin, and Northrup Grumman.

As an attorney with the US Department of Justice, Michael was the lead attorney on one of DOJ’s first “pattern or practice” sexual harassment cases. After leaving the Department of Justice, Michael co-founded and served as co-CEO of Brightline Compliance, which ultimately provided online and on-site training on investigations and compliance topics to more than 1.5 million employees of more than 600 clients. Before selling Brightline to a private equity group, Michael was able to refine and apply deception detection skills in the context of negotiating business deals and managing employees.

Michael has served as an expert witness in cases challenging the adequacy of employer’s investigation procedures. He is a graduate of Duke University and Harvard Law School.
