Former IMF Managing Director, Governor of Bank of France, Chair of Paris Club

Michel Camdessus is a French economist and administrator who served as the Managing Director and Chairman of the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from January 16, 1987, to February 14, 2000. As the seventh Managing Director, he holds the record for the longest tenure in this position. His leadership was reaffirmed when he was unanimously selected by the Executive Board of the IMF to serve a third five-year term in 1997.

Prior to his role at the IMF, Camdessus was deeply involved in the banking sector in France; he was the Deputy Governor of the Bank of France starting in August 1984 and was appointed Governor in November 1984. Additionally, he served as Chairman of the Paris Club from 1974 to 1984 and was Chairman of the Monetary Committee of the European Economic Community from December 1982 to December 1984. His academic foundation was laid at the University of Paris, followed by postgraduate degrees in economics from the Institute of Political Studies of Paris and the National School of Administration.

Currently, Camdessus is active in several social and economic platforms. He presides over the social initiative Semaines sociales de France and is a member of the Commission for Africa, which was established by Tony Blair. He is also involved with the Pontifical Commission for Justice and Peace. As a member of the Africa Progress Panel (APP), Camdessus works to promote sustainable development in Africa. He continues his commitment to global development as a board member of the Fondation Chirac and participates in the jury for the foundation’s Conflict Prevention Prize and its scientific committee for the Water and Sanitation programme.
