Michelle Causton

An accountant with personality, who understands that business runs on people, not on numbers.

Michelle Causton, MBA, FCGA, is a full time professor in the accounting department of Canadore College in North Bay, Ontario and a part time instructor at Nipissing University. Her teaching focus is tax and management accounting. And she is dedicated to proving that accountants do have personality.

She is the author of Governance (An overview) and Management (The undisciplined discipline). She also authored a booklet, Grassroots Governance: Governance and the Non-Profit Sector which was published by the Certified General Accountants of Ontario. As a past president of the Certified General Accountants of Ontario she draws on many years of association experience to discuss the perils and pleasures of volunteering.

Prior to teaching, Michelle worked in public accounting. There she polished her skills as a trainer as she worked with small and medium sized business, helping them translate accounting data into useful information. Over the years she was increasingly fascinated with the way people interact with data. Too often the numbers, rules, procedures and processes are treated as though they, in themselves, are meaningful. People are the wildcard - the unpredictable variable. This knowledge combined with the belief that clarity in communication is a scarce resource lead her to create seminars designed to help individuals control their lives and influence others.

Her passion is showing that ethics and accountability cannot be reduced to codes of conduct and rules of behaviour. She makes it personal, interesting, fun and relevant. "If it's not fun, why are we doing it?", is more than a catch phrase. It is a way of life. Michelle firmly believes that most things are fun and she shares her sense of humour and off kilter observations with all of her audiences.
