Mira Sorvino

Academy Award-Winning Actress & United Nations Goodwill Ambassador on Human Trafficking

Mira Sorvino is an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award-winning actress, U.N. Goodwill Ambassador, and activist. Sorvino's first major screen appearance was in the teen television series "Swans Crossing," on which she appeared in six episodes. In 1995, she landed the role of Leslie, a happy-go-lucky prostitute, in "Mighty Aphrodite," which launched her into stardom. This role won her an Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress. She was also recognized by the Critics' Choice Movie Award, the Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Association, the National Board of Review, and the New York Film Critics Circle all for Best Supporting Actress in 1995.

Continuing her successful career, Sorvino appeared in numerous films, including "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion," "Mimic," "Like Dandelion Dust," and "Sound of Freedom," as well as "Reservation Road," and "Union Square." She was also cast in the television series "Psych," "Falling Skies," "Intruders," "Modern Family," and the Netflix miniseries "Hollywood." Sorvino also portrayed Marilyn Monroe in "Norma Jean & Marilyn," a role for which she was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie and was nominated twice for a Golden Globe for Best Actress – Miniseries or Television Film.

Sorvino's activism began in the same year she became affiliated with Amnesty International, an organization which would later honor her with their Artist of Conscience Award. She has been a United Nations Goodwill ambassador for combatting human trafficking, using her platform to travel the world and testify to Congress on human trafficking atrocities occurring globally. Sorvino came out publicly about the sexual harassment she endured from Harvey Weinstein, believing it damaged her career, and has spoken out about her own experience as a survivor of date rape.

Sorvino graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a degree in East Asian studies. It was here that she co-founded the Harvard-Radcliffe Veritones, one of Harvard's co-ed a cappella groups, and published her thesis, "Anti-Africanism in China: An Investigation into Chinese Attitudes Towards Black Students in the PRC."
