Misty May-Treanor is a three-time gold medalist at the 2004, 2008, and 2012 Summer Olympic Games. May-Treanor and her partner Kerri Walsh Jennings are considered the greatest beach volleyball team of all time.
May-Treanor and Jennings were distinguished as AVP Team of the Year for six consecutive years (2003 through 2008). May-Treanor was also named Most Valuable Player in 2005-2008, Best Offensive Player from 1998-2008, and Best Defensive Player from 2002-2008. She was the first and only woman besides Walsh to reach 100 tournament victories and currently has the most wins of any female to ever play the sport.
May-Treanor attended Long Beach State where she was part of the 1998 NCAA Championship, defeating Penn State and was awarded the NCAA Championship Co-MVP. In addition to the victory, May-Treanor received several other collegiate accolades including the 1998 Honda Broderick NCAA Athlete-of-the-Year Award and was a NCAA First-Team All-American in the years 1996-1998. Her 1998 team was one of just three college teams to go undefeated in a season. She graduated with a BA in Kinesiology.
Outside of beach volleyball, May-Treanor competed on the seventh season of Dancing with the Stars, where she was injured during a dance ending her run on the show. She serves as a Sports Ambassador for the Special Olympics Southern California and previously served on the Board of Governors.
May-Treanor retired from competitive play on August 8, 2012, after she and Walsh Jennings finished first in the 2012 Summer Olympic games.
As of July 2016, she serves as the Director of Volleyball at Long Beach City College where she coaches women's indoor and beach volleyball teams. She also owns a beach volleyball club called Dream in Gold (DIG) to train the next generation of beach volleyball players.
In 2018, May, along with Bill Belichick, Mariano Rivera, Herschel Walker, were appointed by President Trump to the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition; she serves as co-chair.
