Molly Ringwald is a film, theatre and television actress, and best-selling author. She is best known as the endearing and witty star of the beloved John Hughes classics Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Pretty in Pink. From these roles, Ringwald became a teen icon who defined teenage angst, love, and heartbreak.
She was cast in her first major role as Molly in the NBC sitcom The Facts of Life (1979–80) after a casting director saw her playing an orphan in a stage production of the musical Annie.
Ringwald began her film career at the age of 13 in Paul Mazursky's The Tempest, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination. She went on to star in numerous films, including The Pick-Up Artist (1987), For Keeps (1988), Fresh Horses (1988), Betsy's Wedding (1990), Cindy Sherman's directorial debut Office Killer (1997), Billy Bob Thornton's short film Some Folks Call It a Sling Blade (1994), and the now-iconic coming-of-age movies Sixteen Candles (1984), The Breakfast Club (1985), and Pretty in Pink (1986).
In 1992, Ringwald moved to Paris and acted in such foreign films as Tous Les Jours Dimanches, Enfants de Salaud, and Jean-Luc Goddard's King Lear.
Her television credits include the critically-acclaimed comedy series Townies (1996), Stephen King's The Stand (1994), the Emmy-nominated Allison Gertz Story (1992), and Raising Expectations (2016). Ringwald also found success in the breakout television hit The Secret Life of the American Teenager which ran for five years from 2008 to 2013 on ABC Family. She is also known for her recurring role as Mary Andrews in The CW hit based on Archie Comics, Riverdale.
In 1997, Ringwald moved to New York City, where she starred in Paula Vogel's Pulitzer Prize-winning How I Learned to Drive, a role she reprised at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. Subsequent theater credits include playing the legendary character Sally Bowles in the Broadway production of Cabaret; the Tony-nominated Broadway production of Enchanted April; and the London production of When Harry Met Sally. She created the role of Horton Foote's Lily Dale in the New York off-Broadway production, performed the role of Salome (with Al Pacino) and starred in Jonathon Larson's musical Tick Tick Boom! and the hit comedy Modern Orthodox
Ringwald released her first book in 2010. The Wall Street Journal and Los Angeles Times best-selling Getting The Pretty Back: Friendship, Family, and Finding the Perfect Lipstick, is part memoir, part girlfriend's style guide that explores subjects as diverse as romance, motherhood, hair & make-up, fitness, food and music. This was followed by her second publication, When It Happens to You: A Novel in Stories, released in 2012.
In 2013, Ringwald released two jazz albums, Except Sometimes and Going Home Alone.
Ringwald seeks to empower women everywhere to be "the sexiest, funniest, smartest, best-dressed, and most confident women possible." Whether she's discussing sex and beauty, personal style, travel and entertaining, motherhood, or friendships, she embodies the spirit of being fabulous at every age.
