Professor of Global Health, Humanitarian Affairs Expert, Human Rights Advocate

Mukesh Kapila, CBE is Professor of Global Health and Humanitarian Affairs at the University of Manchester and holds several influential positions, including Chair of Nonviolent Peaceforce, Chair of Manchester Global Foundation, and Special Representative of the Aegis Trust for the prevention of crimes against humanity. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the International Centre for Humanitarian Affairs Nairobi and an Associate Fellow of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy. His extensive experience spans international development, humanitarian affairs, human rights, and diplomacy, with particular expertise in crimes against humanity, disaster and conflict management, and global public health. His memoir "Against a Tide of Evil," published in 2013, was nominated for the Best Nonfiction Book of that year.

Kapila has a rich history of involvement with international organizations, having served as Under Secretary General at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and as a Director at the World Health Organization in Geneva. He has held advisory roles including Special Adviser to the first-ever World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul in May 2016, and various positions within the United Nations in Geneva and Afghanistan. His early career in the British National Health Service involved pioneering work in HIV and AIDS, leading to the establishment of the UK’s first national program in this area.

In addition to his professional achievements, Kapila is a committed advocate for the rights of indigenous peoples, emphasizing the importance of their role in global dialogues on human rights and environmental stewardship. He stresses the significance of international and national recognition of indigenous rights, highlighting key developments such as the establishment of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in 2002 and the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in 2007. His efforts in various fields have earned him numerous accolades, including being named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2003, receiving the Global Citizenship Award in 2007, the "I Witness" award in 2013, and a special resolution by the California State Legislature in 2014 for his lifetime achievements and meritorious service.
