Award-Winning Actress Known for "Black Swan," "V for Vendetta" & Playing Padmé Amidala in the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy

Natalie Portman, whose birth name is Neta-Lee Hershlag, is an Israeli-American actress and filmmaker.

In 1994, she made her feature film debut playing the young protégée of a hitman in the action film Léon: The Professional (1994). She began starring as Padmé Amidala in the Star Wars prequel trilogy while she was still in high school, which earned her international recognition as an actress.

While continuing to star in the Star Wars films, Portman earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the prestigious Harvard University.

Portman’s career continued to progress with roles as Evey Hammond in V for Vendetta and Anne Boleyn in The Other Boleyn Girl. She played a troubled ballerina in the psychological horror film Black Swan in 2010, where she met French dancer and choreographer Benjamin Millepied, who would later become her husband. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for that role.

Portman starred as Jane Foster in the Marvel films Thor and Thor: The Dark World, and earned her third Academy Award nomination for her performance as Jacqueline Kennedy in the biopic Jackie.

Portman is a vegan and an outspoken animal rights advocate. She supports the Democratic Party in the United States, and criticized Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his “racist” comments, saying that she was “disappointed” by his 2015 re-election.

An investment group led by actress Natalie Portman has been awarded the rights to a professional women’s soccer team in Los Angeles that would begin play in 2022, the National Women’s Soccer League announced.
